The Police Ombudsman's Office has appealed for witnesses in relation to a fatal crash in Derry/Londonderry at the weekend.

Twenty-three year-old Noel Christopher Doherty, from Drumleck Drive in the city, died after his car left the Culmore Road and struck a tree at around 3.40am on Saturday morning (21 January). A police vehicle had been following the car before the crash.

The Police Ombudsman investigates any incident in which police are present when a person dies, and launched an investigation after being informed of the incident by the police.

Police Ombudsman investigators attended the scene and spoke to police and civilian witnesses. A forensic examination of the scene was also carried out.
Investigators would like to hear from anyone else who was in the Moyola Drive area of Shantallow or in the vicinity of Culmore Road at around 3.30am on Saturday morning (21 January) and who witnessed anything in relation to the incident.

They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a blue Renault Megane car or an unmarked black-coloured Ford Mondeo police vehicle.
