It first opened its doors to the public on 6 November 2000.

Since then, Mrs (now Baroness) Nuala O'Loan, Mr Al Hutchinson, Dr Michael Maguire and now Mrs Marie Anderson have all held the post of Police Ombudsman.

The organisation heralded what was referrred to by one member of Government at the time as a 'radical new approach' in dealing with complaints about the conduct of police officers.
