Some key takeaways:
- We received 3,085 complaints, an 8% decrease on last year.
- 37% of complaints closed during the year were subject to a full investigation.
- In 12% of these complaints we found evidence to substantiate all or part of the complaint.
- We sent 160 recommendations to PSNI for either a discipline or performance action.
- We sent 158 recommendations to the PPS, with 11 recommendations for prosecution.
- Public awareness of the Police Ombudsman and its independence from police remained high: 91% of respondents were aware of the office and 89% believed the office was independent of the police.
- 81% of complainants who responded to our survey felt they were treated with respect. Those who responded were least satisfied with the manner in which their complaint was treated and the time taken to resolve their complaints.
- Police officers had a positive view of our staff, with 86% saying they were treated with respect and 75% stating they were treated fairly. Police Officers were most dissatisfied with the length of time taken to resolve complaints (63%) and with the frequency of updates (55%). 71% felt the complaint made about them was dealt with independently.
