Published Date: 15.06.2009

The Police Ombudsman's Office has appealed for information about the circumstances leading up to the murder of Kevin McDaid in Coleraine.

Mr McDaid was murdered during a violent disturbance in the Heights area of the town during the evening of 24 May.

The incident was referred by the PSNI to the Police Ombudsman for independent investigation of the police handling of the situation. The Police Ombudsman has since also received a complaint about the incident.

Police Ombudsman investigators would like to speak to members of the public who were in licensed premises in Newmarket Street during the afternoon of 24 May, and who may have seen police entering those premises.

They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who witnessed any communication, either in person, by 'phone or by text message, between police and people in the bars.

Anyone who can assist the investigation is asked to call the Police Ombudsman's freephone witness appeal line on 0800 032 7880.
