Police Ombudsman investigating circumstances surrounding Portstewart house death

Published Date: 16.05.2009

The Police Ombudsman is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 44-year-old man in Portstewart earlier today (Saturday 16 May).

All incidents in which a person dies shortly after contact with police are automatically referred to the Police Ombudsman for independent investigation.

Police were called to a reported assault at a house in the Lever Park area of the town shortly after 9am.

On arrival, officers found a female who had left the house having suffered facial injuries. The injuries are not at this stage thought to be life-threatening.

Police did not enter the house until it was deemed safe to do so, but when they later did go into the property they found the body of the 44-year-old man who had sustained fatal knife wounds.

The body of a dog, which had also been attacked, was also found in the house.

Police Ombudsman investigators are continuing their enquiries.
