OFFICE ALERTED TO INCIDENT INVOLVING DEATH OF AN ADULT MALE

Friday, 06 January 2012

The Police Ombudsman's Office was alerted to an incident yesterday afternoon in which an adult male was found dead in his home.

Police had visited the man during the night in response to a reported disturbance, and left shortly afterwards. Yesterday morning the man's apparently lifeless body was discovered in his home. He could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor.

The PSNI referred the matter to the Police Ombudsman's Office, following standard procedure which requires them to do so if a person has died within 24 hours of contact with the police.

Police Ombudsman investigators checked the police Command & Control serials which outlined the police response to the incident, and made further enquiries which established the details of the officers who attended the house during the night and the next morning after the man had been discovered. A Police Ombudsman Family Liaison Officer was tasked to gather further information from the family of the deceased.

It was established that there were no apparent suspicious circumstances to the death, no apparent police failings and nothing to suggest any misconduct on the part of the police. There is also no public complaint.

The Office will therefore not be conducting any further enquiries at this stage..
